Most Valuable Player/John Bell Memorial Trophy - Frankie Hare, Guelph
The Royals second baseman enjoyed a tremendous season, both on the field and at the plate, batting .414 to finish tied for second in the league in hitting. He also belted 10 home runs (fourth) and 36 RBI (also fourth), while stealing 19 bases (tied for third) and making just four errors in the field all season.
The 30-year-old native of Guelph has been a mainstay on his hometown team for many years, and edged out Brantford Red Sox slugger Scott Thorman for the MVP honor. Hare received 29 votes, with Thorman getting 18. Outfielder Glen Jackson of the Toronto Maple Leafs finished third in voting with eight votes.
Rookie of the Year/Brian Kerr Memorial Trophy – Clay Caulfield, Toronto
Caulfield was an immediate success in his first full IBL season. The Leafs right hander captured the league’s ERA crown with an impressive 1.96 mark, and posted a perfect 5-0 record with 60 strikeouts, the second most in the league.
The 26-year-old native of Toronto who played at Charleston College walked just 10 batters all season and became one of the club’s aces in his first full season of IBL play. He was a clear winner with 31 votes, with David Hatt of Guelph, Iggy Villalobos of Kitchener and James Amelotte of Ottawa all receiving eight votes for the award.
